Document appearing to be a primitive bail bond arrangement, 1797 February 14
File — Box: MSS-007.002, Folder: 16
Note
Jonathan R. Smith must appear before the court on the 16th of February to stand charged with the "felonius takeing and stealing the property of Jacob Post and Isaac Jackson." If he fails to do so, he will be required to pay £5 to the state (similar to forfeiture of a bond in modern criminal practice). Additionally, if he fails to show, Joseph Seaman will also be required to pay £5 to the state. Mr. Seaman seems to be standing in as a surety for Mr. Smith's appearance. Dated 14th of February, 1797 and signed by Richard Jackson. This writ is folded in half and is quite long when unfolded.
