Francis Cabell Brown Collection of Justice of the Peace Documents

Historical Note

This is a collection of documents and bound manuscripts collected by Francis Cabell Brown. The documents are Justice of the Peace records from Queens County, New York and Windham County, Litchfield County and New London County in Connecticut, that span the time frame of 1754-1830. One of the writs is believed to be by Jonathan Trumbull Sr. who was known for his support of the colonies during the Revolutionary War.

There are bound manuscripts from the 18th century, consisting primarily of trial notes from the Courts of Common Pleas and Kings Bench from the late 17th into the 18th century.

The collection was donated to the Georgetown Law Library Special Collections by the collector's son Francis Cabell Brown, Jr. in 1987.

Processing

Special Collections is processing these materials: i.e. removing acidic folders and replacing with acid-free folders, putting each document into Mylar shelves and recording each folder content on inventory list. Inventory is attached.
