This is a scraplook of the van Bokkelen case regarding an American imprisoned in Haiti for debt. The case could not be settled with the Republic of Haiti, so it was submitted to Morse for arbitration. The arbitration resulted in van Bokkelen was releaed on a debt payment plan. The ledger contains correspondence from lawyers, court document copies, manuscript notes, congratulatory letters, and newspaper clippings about the case. There is also a copy of the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation, and for the Extradition of Fugitive Criminals, between the United States of America and the Republic of Hayti [sic].
