Biographical / Historical
Edgar (Edward) J. Woodward was born to Joel N Woodward and Sarah Ann Pratt in Delaware, Ohio, 1845. Details of his early life are unknown. At the age of 19, Woodward travelled to Cleveland, Ohio to join the Union Ohio Volunteers (Ohio National Guard). On the second of May, 1864, he was enrolled into Company E of The Guard’s 150th regiment as a private and tasked with 100 continuous days of active duty (volunteers serving this term, known colloquially as the “Hundred Days Men,” were largely untrained and took up unskilled positions - freeing more experienced veterans for combat duty). Less than a week later, his battalion was sent to Washington D.C. to defend the nation’s capital. The 150th Infantry was garrisoned at numerous battle posts in the greater D.C. area, including Forts Lincoln, Saratoga, Thayer, Bunker Hill, Slocum, Totten, and Stevens. These men helped quell early attacks on Washington such as the Confederate charge at Fort Stevens on July 11, 1864. Woodward completed his service and was honorably discharged on August 23rd, 1864 in Cleveland. The following year, Woodward was appointed to 2nd lieutenant under General Order 131 on March 11th 1865. This appointment required him to recruit 20 men from Cuyahoga and adjacent counties to the Union cause. Again, Woodward successfully completed his military duty and drafted the necessary recruits for his command. He was mustered out at Camp Chase (located near Columbus, Ohio) April 21st 1865. After his military career, Woodward married Flora Heikes on July 30th, 1874 in Montgomery Ohio. Edgar J. Woodward died sometime in the year 1900, purportedly from heart disease, and his wife passed soon after on November 2nd, 1907. They were survived by their children Eddie, Ella, George and Charles.
