Historical Note
The Council of Europe was established on May 5, 1949 in Strasbourg, France by the Treaty of London. Its official mission states that its primary aim is to create a common democratic and legal area throughout the whole of the continent, ensuring respect for its fundamental values: human rights, democracy and the rule of law. Its membership includes 47 countries and is made up of several institutions including Secretary General, Committee of Ministers, and the European Court of Human Rights.
