Biographical / Historical

Smith grew up in Plant City, Florida. He received his law degree from the University of Florida College of Law and was a Rhodes Scholar, spending three years at Oxford University. Upon his return to the U.S., Smith joined the law faculty at the University of Florida, and subsequently joined the Tampa firm of Carlton, Fields. Smith served as president of the ABA from 1980-1981. He has also served as president of the Florida Bar foundation, Florida Legal Services, Inc., and the International Bar Association.
